Congested? Runny nose? Allergies in your nose or throat? Post-nasal drip irritating your throat?
Congestion is yucky. How can you easily, safely get the irritating gunk out of your nose and throat?
A simple saline rinse, once or twice a day, whenever your nose or throat is irritated.
Saline rinse gently flushes saline water through your nose, in one nostril and out the other. Lean slightly over the sink, tip your head a little to one side and forward. Half bottle left nostril, half right nostril.
Invert the bottle, so the nozzle points up into your nose. Press the button on what is now the top of the bottle; water flows when the button is pressed. When the bottle is mostly empty (water doesn’t flow as much), release the button, gently squeeze to get the rest of the water out and up into your nostril.
If your throat is sore, you can get some saline to go into your throat (and out your mouth) simply by not tipping your head forward as much. Like gargling salt water, but without making your throat vibrate, which is itself irritating. Avoid swallowing the “yucky stuff” carried out by the saline; spit it out instead.
Some people find saline slightly irritating. Simple solution: add a little baking soda. For 300ml water, use 1/2 tsp no-iodine salt and 1/8 tsp baking soda.
